Setting Your Classroom Up for Success: Procedures, Procedures, Procedures!

Classrooms can be chaotic! Procedures, structure, routine. Those are my buzz words. Come and discuss procedures and expectations you can set up at the beginning of the year to help ensure you have a smoothly run classroom, minimizing interruptions and maximizing student engagement. I am all about keeping it simple for my students and for myself. I have procedures for everything from dull pencils to demonstrating learning because I believe students learn best when they have structure and routine. Creating and maintaining that structure and routine in my classroom is the most important thing I do to set students up for success in their learning.

Know the Law(s) and Thrive Within Them

Teacher attendees will drive this session. While the laws are the laws, everything else is meant for the educator to feel empowered to know how to teach content in a way that invites students to engage with their learning in a meaningful and authentic way. After researching and addressing laws that can add challenges to our teaching, I will demonstrate how issues arise in the classroom. I will help model pedagogy that allows for students to interact with content in a lawful manner. Through group discussions and individual interactions, we will test out pedagogical strategies that will aid you in cultivating confidence within yourself to navigate hard topics. Also, I will be available for follow-up consultation for any specific questions you may have after the session.

The New Art and Science of Teaching

The New Art and Science of Teaching (2017) continues the work of Marzano's previous Art and Science of Teaching he published in 2007. With the new version, Marzano has created a Model of Instruction that introduces educators to three categories, ten design areas, and forty-three elements or strategies that teachers can use to meet the needs of their students. When we have a clear focus on what we want students to learn, how they can learn it, and then respond with appropriate interventions to meet their needs, we will help students find success. This Model of Instruction also allows teams the ability to increase instructional competence and to coordinate efforts.

Collaborative Classrooms

True believers of collaborative classrooms see the benefits of individuals working together. From the workplace to relationships, the social skills of collaboration are central to our society. The classroom is a perfect place to learn the skills of working together. Every teacher has attempted a group project only to see the students devolve in chaos. Incredible amounts of class time were wasted, the end projects were poor quality, and it turned out that one group member completed the entire project. These frustrations and many others have stopped many educators from doing collaborative projects within their classes. What does it take to make collaboration work in the classroom? This session will explore the elements of successful classroom collaboration: walking through the foundations of classroom setup, building relationships, teaching social behaviors, steppingstone assignments, and large group projects.

Come and discuss procedures and expectations you can set up at the beginning of the year to help ensure you have a smoothly run classroom, minimizing interruptions and maximizing student engagement. I am all about keeping it simple for my students and for myself.

I Can Do That! Personalized Learning Lets All Students Meet the Objective

Do some of your students struggle to meet a Standard because they lack the skills (or the interest) the unit requires? I've watched English Language Learners (and students who just don't like English class, for that matter) become suddenly excited to take on an assessment once it was freed from all the created expectations and requirements that weighed it down. Personalized learning lets students show mastery with more investment and confidence than standardized assessments. Objective-based lessons and units, especially when they are personalized by student choices, can allow even our struggling students to succeed. Join us to practice designing assessments that focus on your standards yet invite students to take ownership of their learning. Your students will enjoy your class more than ever, and you may feel some new freedom as well.

Throw a Lifeline, My MLs are Drifting!

When students feel that they belong and are successful from the start, they are more likely to attend school, participate in class activities, and show resiliency against adverse experiences. But where can you begin? In this session, the Title III ML team from Federal Programs will share practical strategies for you to use with newcomer multilingual (ML) students on the first day and throughout the year. We have all experienced the need for a "lifeline" to be given to us at times, and everyone's reason for needing the lifeline is different. Our multilingual learners (ML) are often reaching out for support as they learn to navigate through the school day. This session will encourage administrators and teachers to collaborate in discussions centered on ML students. The lifeline discussions may include: the use of ESL tutors, WIDA testing, cultural barriers, translation, comprehensible input, stages of language, available resources, ELLevation platform, and much more.

Common Missteps of Classroom Management

Classroom Management is perhaps one of the most complex and nuanced skill sets, even for the most experienced teachers. In this session, we will identify 4 common missteps too often taken by teachers and the best practices that should be used in their place. We'll focus on missteps relating to the overuse of corrections, separating class environment from class expectations, leveraging the public setting, and overemphasizing extrinsic motivators. Participants will apply their own experience in a reflective process and take away key strategies they can immediately implement in August. Join us as we get real about classroom management, give ourselves grace, and open our mindsets to the possibility of safe, consistent class environments in every class, every year!

Neurodiversity: A Celebration of All Learning Styles

In this session, Speech-Language Pathologist Candice Paulsen provides a closer look at the world of Neurodiversity and how Autism and ADHD can impact students. Providing insights into the minds and experiences of autistic individuals, as well as those with ADHD, Candice offers a new perspective on these populations and how educators and therapists can more effectively support them and reduce stigma. Attendees will be provided with information regarding autistic dysregulation and shut down, special interests and the bridge they can provide toward educator and student communication, the dangers of masking, the truth behind echolalia, and more. By peeking behind the curtain of neurodiversity, this course will help educators, administrators, and therapists provide every student with effective support, guide them toward finding greater insight into how they learn, and to celebrate the ways they are different.

Transforming Trauma: Empowering Learning Through Sensory Regulation Strategies

In "Transforming Trauma: Empowering Learning through Sensory Regulation Strategies," educators are invited to explore the profound impact of trauma on student learning and behavior. This presentation will touch on the science of trauma, unraveling how it disrupts the nervous system and influences a child's ability to engage, focus, and succeed in the classroom. Recognizing that traditional teaching methods may not address the unique needs of trauma-affected students, this session introduces sensory regulation as a transformative tool to foster a supportive learning environment. Sensory regulation strategies are designed to help students modulate their emotional and physiological responses to stress, enabling them to remain present and receptive to new information. Attendees will learn practical, evidence-based techniques that can be integrated into daily classroom routines, creating an environment of calm and security where all students can thrive. The presentation will include real-life success stories, demonstrating how teachers have implemented sensory regulation strategies to make remarkable differences in their students' lives. Interactive demonstrations will provide hands-on experience with sensory tools and activities, equipping educators with the knowledge to customize approaches for their diverse learners. By attending "Transforming Trauma: Empowering Learning through Sensory Regulation Strategies," teachers will be empowered to become change agents in their classrooms. They will leave with a toolkit of strategies to help students navigate their sensory needs, paving the way for enhanced engagement, improved behavior, and academic success. Join us in redefining the future of education, where every child is seen, supported, and set up for success, no matter their background or battles.

Show Me Your Thinking: Visible Learning Strategies

Are students really learning when we teach? Sometimes it's hard to tell, even after our very best lessons. Visible learning strategies allow students to show their thinking! This helps teachers see if students are learning AND helps students analyze their own learning. Visible learning strategies are powerful, proven tools that accelerate student learning. This hands-on session will focus on specific strategies for vocabulary and comprehension teachers can take immediately back to their 3-12 classroom. No matter what subject they teach, all teachers are literacy teachers. Some of the strategies will include foldable vocab, quick draw, thinking boxes, text rendering, reciprocal teaching, text to images, and others.

The Power of Inquiry

Developed by the Right Question Institute, the Question Formulation Technique, or QFT, is a structured method for generating and improving questions. QFT builds the skill of asking questions, an essential, yet often overlooked, lifelong learning skill that allows students to think critically, feel greater power and self-efficacy, and become more confident and ready to participate in civic life. When students are in charge of coming up with questions, they have to engage more deeply in the course content, and they are allowed to think about this material in their own way. QFT cultivates inclusivity by creating a student-centered classroom. This technique shifts the responsibility of posing questions away from teachers and, instead, invites all students to ask questions that are interesting and useful to them, regardless of their expertise or experience. The process requires that each question is equally valued. Students create questions without judgment and without considering possible answers until the question formulation process is complete. This technique also encourages creativity, problem-solving, and reflection.

Sharing Teacher Work Overload: How to Productively Put More on Students

Hey there! Are you ready to embark on a transformative teacher learning experience? Great, because I've got something exciting to share with you. Too often our teachers are overworked and it seems like lately none or very little of the learning onus is placed on students. In this session we'll talk about how to share the workload and empower students to take ownership of their learning and not leave everything always on the teacher through discussing and presenting strategies to increase learner agency. Together, we'll tap into the collective wisdom of the group, bouncing ideas off each other, and co-creating knowledge. We'll tackle some big ideas, dig into those beliefs and assumptions that shape how we see education in our classrooms and walk away with some tangible artifacts and notes, useful tools that you can use in the classroom right away, and also leave equipped with a framework for creating your own learner agency tools. So, come ready to collaborate, explore, and empower yourself and your students.

Utah Microcredentials: Earning Credits, Endorsements, and APPEL Competencies Through Self-Directed Learning

This session will explain what Utah Microcredentials are, how to earn them, and why you want them. We’ll also highlight the new AI, Ed Tech Endorsement, and CTE Endorsement microcredentials. At the end of the session, we’ll help you start earning your first microcredential! Each Utah Microcredential is worth 0.5 USBE credits. Educators are self-directed learners who continually develop new skills and find innovative ways to improve their practice. The Utah Microcredentials System recognizes this and provides educators with an opportunity to earn USBE credits for this self-directed professional learning. Additionally, you can now use microcredentials to earn USBE teaching endorsements! APPEL teachers can also use microcredentials to fulfill their competencies! Utah educators can demonstrate these competencies with microcredentials as an alternative to taking courses. Earning a microcredential provides the educator with three things: visible recognition of demonstrated competency, leadership opportunities, and USBE credit.

We teach students how to take accountability for their academics, how to be assertive in advocating for themselves and how to communicate with others at school, work and home. Come hear the experiences from past Disco students and their time in the program. Come learn a few new techniques or learn more information to bring Discovery to your school.
